Southeast Division Police Station

The Southeast Division Police Station at 8300 Mykawa in Southeast Houston is between the Glenbrook Valley and Sunnyside neighborhoods. The facility is the largest police station in South Houston. The department holds monthly meetings at this location featuring speakers from different divisions (Burglary, Homicide, K-9, Helicopters, etc.) explaining how their division operates. A visitor may also a judge, district attorney, state prison warden, or boot camp director speak. This program is provided so that citizens know what to expect should they ever need the police. After each meeting a reception is held, usually with refreshments, to provide an opportunity for citizens to talk with each other and meet officers that patrol the neighborhood.

The sites for art at the Southeast Division Police Station are inside the administration and juvenile services building, one of the three buildings at the facility.

Prospectus for Commissioning Artworks for the Houston Police Department
Houston Police Department and the Houston Arts Alliance seek artists to provide artwork(s) at the Mounted Police Facility and the Southeast Division Police Station.

The artwork(s) should: Create interest for the community; Reflect the values and principles of the Police Department and the integrity of police professionals; Reinforce the principle that the neighborhood is the basic segment of the community; Reinforce the principle that the Police Department actively seeks the involvement of citizens; Reinforce the principle that the department’s employees are its most valuable asset and Relate to a diverse demographic

The artwork must be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate to the location. Artists should take into consideration the foot traffic in the facility, light sources, and temperature control when designing the artwork.

Works in a variety of media and forms will be considered. Examples of media include but are not limited to: sculpture, textiles, paint, wood, metal, and photography. Although the City of Houston and HAA do not endorse restrictions on artistic content, the Artist Selection Panel will consider the users of the building in making decisions.

Budget
Southeast Division Police Station $153,000 all inclusive
The budget covers all costs associated with the project including but not limited to: artist’s design fee, travel, materials, fabrication costs, liability insurance, documentation, and transportation and installation of the work.
