Kashmere Multi-service Center

Kashmere Multi-Service Center is a renovation of an existing facility at 4802 Lockwood in the Kashmere Gardens neighborhood. The facility is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and provides services to the neighborhood including day care, services for seniors, a YMCA, parenting education and health education programs. Examples of recent offerings include a free kidney screening for individuals at risk of developing kidney disease and a “Will-a-thon” to help seniors 60 and older write a will. There is also a day-care program with 26 children currently enrolled. The center is well used by the neighborhood and clients will benefit from art in their service facility.

Artist Opportunity
Civic art is important for this site and has the opportunity to be fully integrated into the building due to inclusion of the artist during reconstruction. There are two sites for art at Kashmere. The first is a 15’ wall inside the building behind the reception desk. The second location is an exterior wall at the building entrance.

Prospectus for Commissioning Artworks for the Health and Human Services Department of the City of Houston
The City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services and the Houston Arts Alliance are seeking artists to provide artwork at two multi-service centers: Northeast and Kashmere.

The artwork(s) should: Create excitement and interest for the community; Augment activities at the Center and Celebrate the impact the Center has on the community

The artwork must be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate to the location. Artists should take into consideration the high amount of pedestrian traffic within the center, light sources (both natural and electric), and temperature control when designing the artwork.

Works in a variety of media and forms will be considered. Examples of media include but are not limited to: textiles, paint, wood, metal, and photography. Although the City of Houston and HAA do not endorse restrictions on artistic content, the Artist Selection Panel will consider the building’s users in making their selection.

The budget covers all costs associated with the project including but not limited to: artist’s design fee, travel, materials, fabrication costs, liability insurance, documentation, and transportation and installation of the work.
