Mounted Patrol Department and its new facility

The new Mounted Police Facility at 5005 Little York Road is in north Houston. The building is under constructions. Normal hours for the facility are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility will have a large amount of public traffic because, unlike other police stations, citizens are welcome to tour the facility and visit its horses and dogs. Members of the unit will provide demonstrations for schools, civic clubs and other community based programs on a daily basis. Civic art is important for this site and has the opportunity to be fully integrated into the design due to inclusion of the artist during the construction phase.

The Police Department is seeking public artwork to be incorporated into the building entrance.

Prospectus for Commissioning Artworks for the Houston Police Department
Houston Police Department and the Houston Arts Alliance seek artists to provide artwork(s) at the Mounted Police Facility and the Southeast Division Police Station.

The artwork(s) should: Create interest for the community; Reflect the values and principles of the Police Department and the integrity of police professionals; Reinforce the principle that the neighborhood is the basic segment of the community; Reinforce the principle that the Police Department actively seeks the involvement of citizens; Reinforce the principle that the department’s employees are its most valuable asset and Relate to a diverse demographic

The artwork must be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate to the location. Artists should take into consideration the foot traffic in the facility, light sources, and temperature control when designing the artwork.

Works in a variety of media and forms will be considered. Examples of media include but are not limited to: sculpture, textiles, paint, wood, metal, and photography. Although the City of Houston and HAA do not endorse restrictions on artistic content, the Artist Selection Panel will consider the users of the building in making decisions.

Budget
Mounted Patrol Facility $200,000 all inclusive
The budget covers all costs associated with the project including but not limited to: artist’s design fee, travel, materials, fabrication costs, liability insurance, documentation, and transportation and installation of the work.
